A Few of My Favourite Things To Do in Auckland with the Family

6 July 2018 | Hannah Symister

There is so much to do in Auckland for young and old and the local tourist centre will be sure to supply a plethora of information on local attractions. But if you are wanting to experience more than the go-to activities and have the time to enjoy Auckland for all that it has on offer, here are a few of my favourite family-friendly ventures that you shouldn’t pass up.

Visit a Market

Auckland has a diverse range of markets, all offering a myriad of culture and activity. There are plenty of night markets which start at a suitable time to venture with the whole family, and the food is always hot and fresh, and incredibly diverse. The best thing is that Monday is the only night a night market doesn’t feature somewhere in the city. The markets on either a Saturday or Sunday morning are also becoming an icon with new, often specialised markets frequently popping up all over the city. One of my favs is La Cigale on St Georges Road in Parnell for live music, delicious pastries and fresh fruit and veg.

Skip, Run and Jump Around Cornwall Park

This amazing park has so much on offer, not just during the day but in the evening as well. If you are wanting something different to do in the evenings then head to the Stardome Observatory is incredible, especially on a cloudless night. During the day head to One Tree Hill (or Maungakiekie) which sits majestically in the middle of Cornwall Park and is one of the many inactive volcanos in Auckland. It isn’t too hard to climb to the top – though you can easily drive up as well. There is a fantastic playground, which has recently been refurbished, cows, chickens, sheep and other wildlife roam the wide fields on every side. Once you have worked up an appetite retreat to the delights of Cornwall Park Café. If the tables inside are full then head to the grass outside and make yourself comfortable on one of the many beanbags or rugs on offer. You can order the same food as you would inside, but it comes in takeaway form. The Stardome Observatory is also a unique experience for viewing the night skies.

Take to the Beach

Auckland has so many beautiful beaches, and it really doesn’t have to be the peak of summer to enjoy them. Taking a walk along a beach is one of the cities greatest treats, and every sandy shore has something different to see and do. Takapuna is long and features golden sands, it also has an incredible playground beside it featuring daring slides, water play and climbing ropes. Muriwai is exceptionally beautiful with rolling waves and sand for miles, and Mission Bay isn’t far from the city and one of the most visited spots during the summer months.

Enjoy the Waterfront

Walking along the waterfront in the city is heavenly, but particularly on a sunny day. There is so much to see and do, and when refreshments are needed something delicious is never far away. Silo Park is a great hive of activity which often features festivals or events throughout the year. The NZ maritime museum is full of historical artefacts, and you can also book small boat excursions with them. Viewing the incredible yachts that sit in the Viaduct Harbour and surrounding is always magical anytime of the day.

Brunch

This should seriously be in the guide books as a must do event while in Auckland. The cafes Auckland have on offer are unlike any other city in the world, but especially during that first hum of the day. From delicious cream filled jam doughnuts to raw food delights, mince on toast (yep, it’s a weird NZ thing) to waffles or pancakes piled high with unique sugary treats- there will be a café in Auckland to suit your taste buds.
