Lake Tekapo, NZ

The Family Guide to Tekapo

21 March 2018 | Hannah Symister

Tekapo is kind of in the middle of nowhere, but I guess you could say that about many places in NZ, our next door neighbour is Antarctica people! Tekapo is quite often a stopover on the way to Christchurch, Queenstown, Timaru, or Mt Cook. But it is well worth stopping for a night or two as there is plenty to see and do.

Tekapo has a great calmness about it. When I first arrived I couldn’t be anything but still, as if echoing the inert lake and the stationary, timeless mountains. The striking beauty of the lake and the Southern Alps is breathtaking and captivating at the same time. I became lost in the moment. Until my toddler started to screech and scream and started throwing several of the many small stones and rocks found on the shores of the lake into the water.

If you are visiting the lake, you can’t help but stumble across the Church of the Good Shepherd. It sits at the lake’s feet, beckoning all who pass by with its perfectly placed stone walls made from local materials, echoing the vast natural landscape it is carefully placed in. Which is why it is an NZ icon and one of the most photographed places in the country.

Though Lake Tekapo is incredibly beautiful up close, the view from the top of Mt John is inspiring. Once you reach the top you will feel like the most blessed person in the world, being able to experience the incredible view, and see for miles. There is also a cafe (yep there is a cafe at the top of the mountain!!) where you can purchase yourself and the kiddies some of the best hot chocolate around. Unwind, enjoy and explore. Sometimes it isn’t until I get my toddler outside, and present him with only the natural environment around him, that I realize how incredibly entertaining and satisfying nature can be.

Things To Do:

Earth and Sky: Mission to the Moon Tour

At the top of Mt John is an observatory where all sorts of star-gazing opportunities are held. One, of which, is the ‘Mission to the Moon Tour’, which is designed to adhere to the younger galaxy enthusiast.

Tekapo Springs

You could easily spend a couple of days here. Hot pools, a water play area and shallow pool for the younger kids, an ice skating rink in the winter, and huge water slide in the summer. It also has a day spa for those tired mummas in need of a massage or facial.
