Family Vacation In Coromandel

Family Holidays In Coromandel

22 February 2018 | Hannah Symister

Although I have enjoyed the delights of the Coromandel since I was a young girl, only recently have I discovered that the offerings of this incredibly stunning region of NZ are vast and superfluous, and not restricted ‘my’ little corner of it. Of course, I knew this slice of the world was rich in beauty and amazingly restorative for the soul. But it’s only since having children that my deep appreciation for this place has developed.

Although it is typically a December-January destination I enjoy Coromandel at any time of the year, but especially in February and March when the weather is still reasonable, and the herds of people have slowly started to migrate. I have come to know and appreciate some of the secrets it holds. Even in the rain, there are special things to do, but just curling up around a book or a family board game always seems so much more relaxing and doable in this part of the world.

I have listed some of my favourite things to do, but nothing beats a walk along the beach while collecting shells, or a dinner of fish and chips outside on a warm evening. Days don’t need to be complicated or task orientated, Coromandel causes you to stop looking at the clock and relax. No spa, massage or pampering needed (though if this a necessity there are, of course, some great places to retreat to). Even if it is just for a weekend this place doesn’t disappoint.

Family Friendly Adventures

The Water Works
471 The 309 Rd, Waiau 3581

Don’t be put off by the crazy gravel road you have to take to get to this little place of adventure. This is a fantastic place to go with children of all ages, especially on a scorching day. Contraptions all powered by water, picnic spots and a playground made out of recycled and salvaged items.

Driving Creek Railway
380 Driving Creek Rd, Coromandel 3506

Something I enjoyed when I was younger which I now get to share with my two young boys. They have several train times throughout the morning and afternoons, but either arrive very early or book ahead as it can get very busy. The ride takes you up a very steep hill and then back down, and was originally built to cart clay and wood down the mountain. This is the only narrow-gauge mountain railway in NZ.

Hot Water Beach

Even if the weather is poor this is the beach to make your way to. We visited on an overcast, rainy day and it was the best decision we made. Classically beautiful, the sand is dark but soft, and the water is blue. Waves can be choppy, and often filled with surfers -so do hold onto your little ones. But the real treat is the hot water! Dig a hole and watch it fill with water which so hot you can cook food in it! Cool it down with a little water from the sea – the best time to visit is 2 hours either side of high tide.

Victoria Battery Tramway and Museum
Ohinemuri River, Waikato

Only open on Wednesdays and Sundays, this is a fascinating bit of history which has very little publicity. Much of the site is half buried in weeds and plants giving it the impression of an ancient hidden city. It was once a huge industrial site which processed quartz ore. Fun tram rides throughout the day which is a lot of fun for the little ones. https://www.vbts.org.nz/index.php

Favs for the Foodies

Coromandel Mussel Kitchen
Cnr Manaia road & The 309 Rd, Coromandel 3506

A huge outdoor area with picnic tables and a lovely garden. Gastropub type food serving piping hot fries and the freshest mussel dishes you will ever get. Great for the little ones as there is plenty of space to run around without bothering the neighbouring customer.

Umu Café
22 Wharf Rd, Coromandel 3506

Umu has a large outside area and diverse range of food catering to most diets. We did not experience a great coffee last time we visited, but it is usually pretty good. Lots of options for picky eaters and a large outdoor area.

Wharf Road
24 Wharf Rd, Coromandel 3506

Sitting right next to Umu Cafe is this cute eatery serving delicious food and great coffee. Though it is a little small, there are still loads of different areas to relax, including a cute outdoor patio. The scones and cakes are highly recommended.

Hot Waves Café
8 Pye Pl, Hot Water Beach 3591

Great food, and not far from the beach. Very accommodating to kids and families. Perfect for a hot meal or drink after a swim.

Jandals
5 Albert St, Whitianga 3510

A great stop for breakfast especially if you love Eggs Bene. Relaxed cafe with a small kids area and yummy food which is homely and delicious. They also have a kids menu, hooray! A short walk to the reasonably sized waterfront playground.
