My Favourite City At Christmas – London

8 December 2017 | Hannah Symister

If I could be anywhere in the world at Christmas time it would be London. Even after living in the city for many years the glow doesn’t seem to fade for this wonderful city in December. Sparkling lights and Christmas decorations are displayed in style. People are happy/ier, and if you are lucky, snow may adorn the streets. There are so many exciting things to do with the little ones, you definitely won’t be bored! Pantomimes are a favourite for many, featuring vibrant costumes, a lot of laughs, and maybe a celeb or two. There are also some stand out concerts and Christmas Carols shown at some of the best venues in London. Don’t let the cold put you off, refreshments at Christmas time are sure to warm you up. If Starbucks festive hot chocolates don’t take your fancy, then roasted chestnuts and mulled wine (for the adults) are always easily accessible, wherever you may be in the city. So put those gloves and your woolly hat on, if you’re in London with your family, you are in for a real treat.

Festive Activities For Children Not to Be Missed

Skate on a pop-up skating rink in a beautiful location

One of the most beautiful sights in London during these cold months are the ice rinks set up on some wonderfully iconic sights. They are open throughout the day and right into the late hours of the evening, so there is always an opportunity to take part. Skates are included in the price and come in a range of sizes. Don’t worry if you haven’t ever skated before, stick to the walls and outer circle, people are usually very polite and courteous. My favourite rinks are in Hyde Park, The Natural History Museum and Somerset House. Skate lessons are also available for young children (over 4’s) at Somerset House, booking essential – https://www.somersethouse.org.uk/whats-on/skate-somerset-house/skate-school-and-polar-cub-club

Experience One of the Many Christmas Markets

No, it’s not the famous German Christmas Markets, but the UK does have some wonderful markets, some of the best of which are in London. Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park is one of my favourites, beautifully adorned with captivating Christmas lights. The Christmas markets in Leicester Square are also vibrant and features a delightful Santa’s Grotto, and London Bridge Christmas Market is the place to go for delicious Christmas goodies. Go with cash ready in your pocket, the lines for cash machines can be long at peak times.

Visit a Large Department Store

I am a huge fan of large department stores at Christmas time, especially the classier, or more sophisticated type. London has an array, with many offering visual delights for children, and often feature a prodigious Grotto and Mr Claus himself. Harrods has a wonderfully regal Santa the kids will be delighted to meet and have their photograph taken with. Harrods also has a fantastic children’s department. Fortnum and Mason aren’t as child-friendly but is full of delicious (and rather expensive) goodies, beautifully dressed footmen, and captivating Christmas decorations grace every corner. Best of all, their Christmas windows are spectacular and quite famous at Christmas time, you’re kids are bound to be impressed.

Meet Santa

It seems Santa Grottos are multiplying every year, some though, have that something extra special for the little ones, and feature a very believable Santa. Battersea Park Children’s Zoo has loads of little treats and activities, included in your visit to Santa. If you visit Father Christmas at Legoland you receive a special lego giftbag, and London Wetland Centre has husky sleigh rides (now sold out though, boohoo!). One of my favs though is London Zoo which has real Reindeer to greet you at Santa’s Grotto.

Watch the Santa Fun Run

This is such a treat and not a ‘touristy’ event you would be pointed to if visiting London, but definitely, one to add to the list. Imagine thousands of Santas running through a park at the same time. It is hilarious to watch (and take part as I have done) but it may need explaining to those small believers! There are several fun runs in the city, the main one is always the first weekend of December in Victoria Park and features a free running event for all under 8 years. Battersea Park also has a run coming up this weekend (December 9th) and always features loads of stalls, food and other treats for the thousands who either run or attend as a supporter. https://www.209events.com/uk-running-events/london-santa-run-battersea-park
